Climbing Nelion (5,188m) and Batian (5,199m), the highest peaks of Mount Kenya, is one of Africa’s most challenging and rewarding technical alpine climbs. This expedition is designed for experienced climbers seeking a true mountaineering adventure involving rock climbing, exposure, and high-altitude endurance.

The route follows the Sirimon approach for proper acclimatization before attempting the classic technical routes on Mount Kenya’s main peaks.

Route: Sirimon Approach – Austrian Hut Technical Climb
Duration: 6 Days / 5 Nights
Difficulty: Technical Alpine Climb (Advanced)
Best Season: January to March and July to October


Climbing Requirements

Participants should have:

• Previous high altitude trekking experience
• Rock climbing experience (Grade IV–V recommended)
• Good physical fitness and endurance
• Ability to use climbing equipment (rope systems, belaying, rappelling)


Day 1: Nairobi / Nanyuki – Sirimon Gate – Old Moses Camp

Altitude: 2,650m to 3,300m
Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours

Transfer from Nairobi or meet in Nanyuki. Drive to Sirimon Gate for registration and briefing.

Begin trek through montane forest transitioning into moorland terrain.

Arrival at Old Moses Camp for acclimatization.

Accommodation: Old Moses Camp
Meals: Lunch and Dinner


Day 2: Old Moses Camp – Shipton Camp

Altitude: 3,300m to 4,200m
Hiking Time: 6 to 7 hours

Trek through Mackinders Valley surrounded by spectacular alpine scenery and towering peaks.

Arrive at Shipton Camp beneath the north faces of Batian and Nelion.

Accommodation: Shipton Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 3: Acclimatization & Technical Training Day

Altitude: Around 4,200m

Important acclimatization and preparation day.

Activities include:

• Short acclimatization hikes
• Rope handling practice
• Anchor systems and safety checks
• Equipment inspection with guides
• Route briefing and weather assessment

Accommodation: Shipton Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 4: Shipton Camp – Austrian Hut Base

Altitude: 4,200m to 4,790m
Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours

Trek to Austrian Hut near the Lewis Glacier, the staging point for technical climbing.

Rest, hydrate, and prepare gear for summit climb.

Early dinner and sleep before alpine start.

Accommodation: Austrian Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 5: Technical Climb – Nelion & Batian Peaks

Altitude: Up to 5,199m
Climbing Time: 10 to 14 hours

Pre-dawn start for the technical ascent via the classic Normal Route on Nelion.

Climbing involves:

• Multi-pitch rock climbing
• Chimneys and exposed traverses
• Fixed belays and rope protection
• High-altitude alpine conditions

Reach Nelion Summit, then traverse the famous Gate of the Mists to Batian Peak, the highest point of Mount Kenya (weather permitting).

After summit success, descend carefully back to Austrian Hut or Shipton Camp depending on conditions.

Meals: All meals included


Day 6: Descent – Sirimon Gate – Departure

Descend via Sirimon Route back to Sirimon Gate.

Transfer to Nanyuki or Nairobi marking the end of your Mount Kenya technical expedition.
